In the 1980s, this increased to 30 km a year. Today, the Pole travels 50, even 60 km – close to 150 metres a day. Scientists don’t quite know why its speed has increased these past 20 years. The magnetic pole is moving northwest of the geographic pole and may soon be across the Arctic Ocean in Siberia. To find their bearings, sailors the world over must know the exact angle of difference between the two geographic and the magnetic north poles: the ‘magnetic declination.’ The magnetic pole moves from the North to the South and vice versa every 250000 years on average and does it very suddenly. Over 180 reversals have been recorded already. As the intensity of the magnetic field tends to diminish, our planet becomes more susceptible to solar storms. Retrieved from: www.nasa.gov PASADENA, Calif. – A new NASA and University of Washington study allays concerns that melting Arctic sea ice could be increasing the amount of freshwater in the Arctic enough to have an impact on the global “ocean conveyor belt” that redistributes heat around our planet. Lead author and oceanographer Jamie Morison of the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory in Seattle, and his team, detected a previously unknown redistribution of freshwater during the past decade from the Eurasian half of the Arctic Ocean to the Canadian half. Yet despite the redistribution, they found no change in the net amount of freshwater in the Arctic that might signal a change in the conveyor belt. Vestas Wind Power Energy News Financial Report First Half 2011 Vestas Wind Systems A/SP: Interim Financial Report, First Half Year 2011 Vestas generated first half-year revenue of EUR 2461m; an increase of 31 per cent on the first half of 2010. EBIT amounted to EUR 8m, against a loss of EUR 219m in the first half of 2010. The EBIT margin thus rose to 0.3 per cent from (11.6) per cent. The free cash flow improved significantly to EUR (494)m from EUR (1058)m in the first half of 2010. The half-year intake of firm and unconditional orders was 2895 MW, and the backlog of firm and unconditional orders amounted to EUR 8.0bn at 30 June 2011. Safety at Vestas’ workplaces was higher than ever before with an incidence of industrial injuries of 3.2. Renewable energy accounted for 32 per cent of Vestas’ total energy consumption in the half-year. Firm and unconditional orders covering almost all the expected revenue of EUR 7bn for 2011 have already been secured, which is why the outlook for revenue, EBIT margin and the free cash flow is maintained at EUR 7bn, 7 per cent and a minimum of EUR 0, respectively. In spite of the macro-economic and financial uncertainty, Vestas still expects an intake of firm and unconditional orders of 7000-8000 MW in a market that remains fiercely competitive.
