How much can you really save with Wind energy?

How much money will I save every month by installing one 1000W wind generator?
This depends of course on many factors, like the wind intensity and speeds in your area or your electricity needs, but to get an idea, lets break it down with the example of the average american household.
The average price for electricity in the U.S. was in 2009 11,76 cents/kWh (see statistics here) , while the average household used 936 kWh a month (see here).
That means the average monthly electricity bill in America is around $110.
How much electricity does a 1000W Wind turbine produce?
Well, if the wind turbine is working at 100% capacity it will produce 1000W in one hour.
So theoretically it would be able to produce 24 kWh per day. Or 720 kWh per month. Of course this is the best case scenario, which is not going to happen, as your windmill will be idle sometime, if there is no wind, or running at low speed, if the wind is not very strong.
But it should be possible, that your wind turbine produces around 200 kWh per month, if you live in an area with wind speeds around 12 miles per hour.
If we take our average electricty price from above and multiply it with the 200 kWh that our home wind turbine produces, we get a theoretical saving of $23.52 a month wich adds up to $282.24 for the whole year.
As you can see, in just a very short time your home made wind turbine will pay for itself. That is the difference to comercial wind turbines of the same size, that could cost you up to $4000 and take a very long time until you get a return on your investment.
So imagine you build two turbines and complement this with solar panels, you could run your house completely on free green energy, and even sell electricity back to the power companies, who will pay you!
This example gives you a better understanding what money saving potential green energy really has and how much you could reduce electric bill.
Building this 1000W wind turbine will cost you less than $100, less then the average monthly Electricity bill in the U.S.
