Day 302 — Using solar and wind power for modern day living — Masa Off Grid

Watch a free Solar Power Presentation

Masa shares with us some great news. Only a week after surgery, Chris the Mapper is doing well. He is up and taking walks. Keep up the good work and we are still sending good wishes to you Chris! We see the shorelines of Alaska while some neighbours perform some general maintenance on a wind turbine that has come down. As promised, Meredith Adams from Spark Energy returns to introduce us to a solar wind powered system she designed for a couple on island that live off grid in a home with modern day conveniences Keep coming back for updates as Masa documents his epic adventures for radX.ca. His new video diary will be published every Tuesday, along with a weekly written blog.

Do they use a diesel generator or just a wood stove and oil lamps during the winter?

  2. nahannig says:

What’s with that weather! Stay warm Masa!

  3. masaoffgrid says:

@nahannig – Minus double digits before windchill…next time I pick an island in Hawaii.

@Ebiczebulanious – the owners of the wind and solar system have a wood stove inside their yurt but generate enough electricity (mostly with the wind in the winter) that they can power a dishwasher, microwave etc. as well as electric lights. They also have a backup gas generator.

@masaoffgrid I would expect the short days during the winter up there would not generate much solar power. Even here in California only 3.8 hrs Max of peak power during the winter months. I’m trying to solar power a travel trailer and finding it’s almost imposable do solar alone.
